Mother's Day is this weekend and we all know that one of mom's favorite gifts is flowers. If you are getting your mom a wonderful bouquet this year, be sure to share these tips with her to keep her flowers looking great. They will help her flowers look fresh and bring joy to her for over a week.

Pick the right flowers from the beginning

The most important thing to get long lasting flowers is to start with good healthy flowers. When you are picking out the flowers look for ones that are about ready to bloom. You should also look for a bouquet that has nice dark green leaves with no blemishes or brown spots. Finally you should take a careful look at the very ends of the stems and make sure that they are cut smoothly, are not frayed, and not split or cracked at the very bottom. Now that we have some high quality flowers, let’s work on how we are going to display them.

Choose a vase and treat the water

You need to pick a vase that is large enough to hold all of the flowers without bunching the stems together. Clean the vase very well with dish soap and rinse it thoroughly. Fill the vase with clean water about 2/3 the way full. Add the package of flower food to the water and stir it well. We now have a clean vase with nutritious water, but we still need to treat the water to keep bacteria from growing in it. The best solution for this is to add about 5 drops of bleach to the water. Be sure to use unscented bleach.  We will need to change the water at least every other day.  Don’t forget to add some bleach to each refill.

Prepare the flowers and put them into the vase

Unwrap the flowers from the packaging and lay the flowers out on a flat surface.  Take one flower at a time and check its stem.  If it looks at all dry or the end is damaged cut the stem at an angle with a sharp par of sheers about ½ inch above the end.  You may need to cut off more of the stem depending on how deep you vase is.  Always cut at an angle.  Remove any leafs that would be under the water line.  Now repeat this for the rest of the flowers.

Enjoy the flowers and your Mother

Your mom should now have a beautiful bouquet that will bring her joy for the next week or more.  Remember to tell her to change the water about every other day and add a few drops of bleach to the water.  Bacteria is the biggest enemy of any standing water.  Keeping the bacteria away will allow the flowers to blossom unhindered.  Enjoy your flowers and your mother’s company.

Happy Mothers’s Day!
